Tuy Tom

Tuy Tom School Cambodia

In January 2019 a group of ten volunteers travelled to Ratanakiri Province in north eastern Cambodia to begin work on the Tuy Tom Primary School. The school caters for 70 students from grades one to four, belonging to the minority Kavat group.

Our team arrived to find two classrooms with dirt floors, dark and dusty walls, and not a single picture book or learning tool in the school. They left behind two brand new classrooms and a fully renovated older school building. All four classrooms now have concrete floors, solar powered lights and fans, and beautiful bright walls, all work being assisted by enthusiastic school children. They are also full of new picture books and learning tools to enhance the students’ education. Our team also created playground equipment such as tyre swings, bench seats, soccer goals and tyre jumps. Finally they painted and refreshed the existing toilet block and water pump amenities.

The Tuy Tom Primary has been transformed into a bright, happy and positive educational facility which is the pride and joy of the entire community.

For the next stage we would like to build a small library/ multipurpose/staff room and create more play and sports spaces for the children.

On a return visit it was great to see the enthusiasm created by the project, with children now keenly creating new vegetable gardens, planting trees and fencing the school surrounds.

This project would not have been possible without the fantastic support given by Mr Vansak Vay, of a local NGO.
